Pumping Station Refurbishments
Type of work
Civil, Mechanical And Electrical Engineering
Many of the pumps and panels, which were in excess of 20 years old, had become susceptible to breakdowns, blockages and other major operational issues. Bournemouth and the surrounding areas have consistently been awarded Blue Flag status for its beaches so failure of any of these pumping stations could result in environmental repercussions, not to mention the wider reaching PR implications for Bournemouth as a holiday destination, and Wessex Water as a service provider.
The pumping stations form a complex arrangement, linking control and automation systems to optimise station capacities and pumping, feeding information back to Wessex Water Control Centre. The contract brief was to renew all the mechanical and electrical equipment and complete any civils works that would improve the sites’ operations. It was imperative to carry out design checks to ensure that the new equipment met the pumping stations’ consents. Each site had to maintain full operational functionality at all times and works had to be executed outside of the bathing season. ACIEM also had the additional difficulty of working within the constraints of small sites, particularly as the equipment to be installed was of a large scale.
