PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE

At Damar Group, we feel it is vital as an SME (Small Medium Enterprise) that we support our local community and nurture talent for the future. We are delighted to have enrolled in the Apprenticeship Scheme and we would like to welcome our new apprentices into the company. A work based-training programme has been designed around the needs of Damar Group and will lead to nationally recognised qualifications.

A number of apprentices have joined Damar Group recently as Electrical Apprentices where, as well as learning practical abilities in a live industrial environment, they will also develop vital life skills such as communication and interpersonal skills in this hands-on method of vocational training. They will work in an environment where they’re encouraged to use initiative and become forward-thinking, and are being mentored by some of Damar Group’s most experienced engineers.

The package of ‘on-the-job’ training means new apprentices will gain a real understanding of what’s involved in working in an industrial setting and should see them qualify as electricians within a four year period. It is envisaged that at the end of their apprenticeship they will be offered full time employment in Damar Group’s electrical engineering division.

Ashley Derrick, a Damar Group electrical supervisor says “So far the lads have settled in really well. They’re showing a lot of enthusiasm which is important in the first few months as the amount of practical work they are able to perform is initially limited under the regulations that govern the employment of young persons. In the environment we work in, there’s a lot to take in but both Joshua and Jordan seem to be taking it all in their stride.”

Senior Operations Manager, Dave Scadding highlights the benefits to Damar Group in taking on apprentices: “The Apprenticeship Scheme helps to deliver skillsets designed around our business by providing the skilled workers we need for the future. A mixture of on and off job learning ensures the apprentices learn the skills that work best for our business. This also helps us to keep pace with the latest technology and working practices in our sector. The Apprenticeship Scheme gives new apprentices the opportunity to get an overview of the industry and Damar Group as an entity, presenting them with choices for the progression of their careers in the future.”
